GRAN VINO DE RUEDA D.O. RUEDA’S NEW INITIATIVE FOR 2021

13/5/2021

Gran Vino Rueda: a new classification focused on the fine dining sector adding prestige and value to the DO Rueda’s wines thanks to the Regulatory Council’s rigorous quality controls.

This year, one of the most important innovations for D.O. Rueda is the launch of 'Gran Vino de Rueda', a new category that is made possible by the highest-quality raw material. Commenting on the announcement, Carmen San Martín, president of the Designation of Origin Rueda, said, “The objective is for the area’s winemakers to experiment and achieve the maximum potential of the permitted varieties, and especially of our native grape, the Verdejo. We want to demonstrate its versatility and ageing capacity, making wines that position the Rueda brand among fine dining.”
The formal tastings to classify the wine for the new nomenclature Gran Vino Rueda began in April. The first wines have already passed the Regulatory Board’s strict quality controls and the sensory and physicochemical analysis carried out by the D.O.’s tasting committee – made up of oenologists, sommeliers and sector professionals. Once these controls have been completed, the products will be marketed with a special back label featuring a black and gold design, colours that convey elegance and exclusivity. In addition, this back label has an engraving specifically designed for D.O. Rueda to certify each wine’s quality and origin.
With this new category, the D.O. Rueda Origin highlights the importance of older vineyards and the work carried out by growers in preserving the area’s heritage. San Martin adds, “Our ‘Gran Vino de Rueda’ adds value for consumers, whom we hope to stun at a domestic and international level. With this initiative, we continue to meet the requirements of an increasingly educated consumer, who puts their faith in the quality of D.O. Rueda wines, which continues to flourish.”
The wines included under this new quality label must meet several requirements: the wines must come from vineyards that are more than 30 years old, the vines must have a maximum yield of 6,500kg/ha and a kilogram-to-litre conversion of 65%.
