London, 28 February 2019 – The DO Rueda hosted its first tasting of the new release 2018 wines in London this week to highlight the quality and increased popularity of the wines in the UK market.
Following an outstanding year for exports to the UK from the region, the DO Rueda plans to up its promotional efforts in this market. In the 12 months to the end of 2017 sales of Rueda wines rose by 42+%, year on year, according to official statistics from the Consejo Regulador.
Mario Muñoz, international promotional director for the DO Rueda, said, “The UK has always been a key market for Rueda wines and these recent figures show that we are gaining ground in the market.”
He continued, “The tasting this week offers press the opportunity to taste the 2018 vintage. This is the first time that we have held a tasting of these wines internationally and chose the UK in order to emphasise out commitment to the market.”
The tasting on Monday (25 Feb, 2019) included a total of over 30 wines including 21 Verdejos and Sauvignon Blancs from the 2018 vintage plus some older wines to highlight the diversity of wine styles available from the region such as the popular barrel-fermented Verdejos.
2019 will be the second year that the DO Rueda has invested in a campaign in this market, including activities at the Wines from Spain trade tasting in March, comprehensive social media activity and trips to the region.
